Google Ads specs: display sizes, HTML5 and Performance Max
Uploaded Google display image ads must be one of 20 exact sizes and no larger than 150 KB, in GIF, JPG and PNG. HTML5 ads can be up to 600 KB, not the 150 KB many guides still quote. Performance Max and responsive ads take images instead, in 1.91:1, 1:1 and 4:5, up to 5,120 KB each.

Google accepts 20 sizes for uploaded image and HTML5 ads. The file must be the exact size in pixels: a 640 × 100 retina export for a 320 × 50 slot is not accepted, and Google does not scale it down.
150 KB for every uploaded image ad, animated or not. Animated GIFs may loop but must stop within 30 seconds and run slower than 5 frames per second.
A file that lands a kilobyte over is the classic last-minute bounce. Gatecheck reports the exact byte count, and for JPG, PNG and WebP statics Pro can compress it under the limit in the browser and re-check it.
Is the Google Ads HTML5 limit 150 KB or 600 KB?
600 KB. Google's page says HTML5 ads must be "600 KB or smaller". The 150 KB figure that still ranks in search is the limit for image ads. The zip can hold up to 40 files (html, htm, css, js, gif, png, jpg, jpeg, svg).
HTML5 upload is only available to eligible Google Ads accounts: open more than 90 days, more than $9,000 lifetime spend and a good policy history.
The HTML file must start with <!DOCTYPE html> and declare its size in an ad.size meta tag.
Everything must be inside the zip, apart from Google Fonts and Google-hosted libraries such as CreateJS and GreenSock on s0.2mdn.net.
Animation must stop within 30 seconds.
How Google Ads compares with CM360, DV360 and IAB is on the HTML5 banner specs page.
What image sizes does Performance Max need?
Landscape 1.91:1 at 1200 × 628 px (minimum 600 × 314 px), square 1:1 at 1200 × 1200 px (minimum 300 × 300 px) and vertical 4:5 at 960 × 1200 px (minimum 480 × 600 px), in JPG and PNG, up to 5,120 KB.
Google recommends at least 4 landscape, 4 square and 2 vertical images per asset group, up to 20 of each.
Logos are separate assets: square 1:1 and optional landscape 4:1.
Drop a file into the checker and it is read in your browser and tested against these placements and the other 21 in the library:
Exact pixel size against every size the placement accepts, including 2× retina files sent by mistake
Aspect ratio and pixel size against each ratio the placement accepts, and any minimum or recommended size
Image format and file weight, CMYK and wide-gamut colour profiles, EXIF rotation and transparency
GIF and animated PNG timing: total run time including loops, and frame rate
HTML5 zips: weight, file count, file types, clickTag, ad.size, files loaded from other servers and ad-server specific rules
Check a set of banners against Google Ads
Checking one file at a time is free, with every check. Pro checks a whole campaign against a delivery plan and exports the report. Nothing is uploaded.
